The Carfax NHS Medical Centre is a new and different kind of NHS service which aims to make local health services more convenient for patients, more responsive to their needs and easier to use.
We opened in April 2009 following a merger between the Daniel Gooch GP practice and the Swindon Walk-in Centre.
Today, the Carfax NHS Medical Centre is a community interest company, run by the staff for the benefit of its patients. We offer a range of services which includes a GP practice for registered patients and a 365 days a year NHS walk-in health service – for anyone to use.
The company employs around 50 staff and we recently made it into the top 100 healthcare organisations in the country as being a good place to work.
We have around 7,000 patients registered with our GP practice and we see another 28,000 people a year through our walk-in service. Many people, especially commuters, workers and families with young children, find the walk-in service particularly helpful as it is open from 7am to 8pm, Monday to Friday and 8am to 8pm at weekends, with no appointment necessary.
Our patients come from many different countries and cultural backgrounds, and some of our team speak several languages including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Tamil and Konkani.
Some of our patients have very specific problems and we run specialist clinics for people who need counselling, and those suffering from mental illness or drug misuse. We also have special services for homeless people and have developed some expertise in helping this group of patients.
Our aim is to treat every patient as an individual and try to meet their needs.
We have a small board consisting of five directors. We all work in the Medical Centre and three of us regularly treat patients. This means we understand your needs and get constant feedback on where we need to improve.
