The Walk-in Service – how it works
You can use some of our services 7 days a week, on a walk-in basis, that is, you can just come in, without an appointment, whether you are registered with us or with a different GP.
When you arrive at the Swindon Health Centre, book in at Carfax NHS Medical Centre Reception. Someone will take your details including why you want to be seen.
The walk-in service is run by a team of experienced, specialist nurses.
Walk-in services include:
- Blood pressure
- Blood tests (Monday to Friday, between 7 am and 12 noon)*
- Coughs and Colds
- Contraception Advice and Emergency Contraception
- Dietary advice
- Dressings
- Ear care (including syringing)
- Minor illnesses
- Minor injuries
- Needle exchange
- Pregnancy tests
- Sprains and Strains
- Stop Smoking help
- Urinary tract infections
Most of these services are free on the NHS, but there is a small charge for some.

* You need first to be referred for a blood test, then just book in at Reception any time between Monday to Friday, 7 am - 12 noon.
We do blood tests until midday, as the blood is then collected by the hospital. If you need a blood test in the afternoon, we can still do it for you but you will have to take it yourself to the Pathology Department at the Great Western Hospital.
There is a charge for private blood tests, eg for fertility clinics, private medicals etc., which is set by the laboratory which processes the blood. We will let you know what this is when we do the blood test.
